What tool do you need to change the oil filter?

From Wally:

I have checked the tool and the # on the tool is 103 589 02 09 00.

After this, you can follow the procedure outlined in the owner's manual to reset the FSS oil change reminder.

From Earl Shepard (eashepard@zianet.com):

Here is another usable oil filter wrench that fits the ML 320 and ML 430 oil filter cap (and probably other Mercedes Benz vehicles with the same engines).

It is available from Checker Auto Parts (one of our local McParts sources) which is part of the corporate family that also includes Kragen.

It is Item No. #10607, with "7 SUPER GRAPHITE OIL FILTER WRENCH FLOTOOL U.S.A." in raised letters inside the tool. It is a cap type, with fourteen flats inside, which fits the M Class oil filter cap perfectly.

You can use it with a 3/8 drive handle or ratchet on the head as well as a l" 6 point socket or a 1" box or open end wrench.

Cost is $4.49 plus your local tax.

From Chip Holland (chip.holland@glbsoft.com):

Given the long intervals for oil changes recommended by the FSS system, I've decided to change the filter only at mid-interval. So, I'm at 17,500 miles and stopped by the dealer to buy a filter. The service guy asked me what kind of filter wrench I was planning on using, and I said "The strap kind". He said "Mercedes makes a filter wrench to fit the new V6 and V8 engines. And it's cheap!". I'm a bit skeptical (after all, who's ever heard of cheap MB tools?), but he gets one out of the back, and pulls it up on the computer and it's only 9 bucks. What it is is a cast aluminum "socket" that slips over the filter housing and allows you to unscrew the housing without damaging it. It has a hex head on it that you use an adjustable wrench on (It's bigger than 19mm, which is the largest size you usually get in a socket set or open-end set). I bought it, used it, and it's pretty slick.

Part numbers are:
  Tool:    103 589 02 09 00  Approx. $9
 Filter:  A 112 180 00 09   Approx. $11

Note that I have a ML320 -- Filter part numbers may be different for the V8 engines (maybe someone can confirm this)

The nice part about the filter housing being on top of the engine is nearly all the oil drains out, so by the time the engine is cool enough to work on, the old filter is almost dry. In with the new Filter kit you get four O-rings: small, medium, medium-plus, and xtra-large. These replace the O-rings that are on the filter housing. Small at the very tip, medium further up, medium-plus about halfway up, and the xtra-large replaces the O-Ring above the threads at the very top.

I topped up the oil (less than .5 quart needed) with Shell Rotella (what the dealer used last time), and I was done!

From Bluefrog on benzworld:

You can also get the tool for removing the oil filter from your local Wal-mart for about $4.00. It is made by strider and it is marked type Q 76mm and 14 flutes.
