What is an initialization parameter?

An initialization parameter specifies the initial value of a servlet variable. It is usually used to customize the behavior of a servlet. For example, if you were writing a servlet that keeps track of the number of hits to a web page, the initializatioin parameter could be used to set the initial count of the number of hits.

There are two ways to set a servlet's initialization parameter:
for example, to set the initialization parameter, "initparam1" to "initVal1," the SSI tag would look like this:
