How do you replace the cabin air filter?

From Mike S.:

I stumbled across the cabin air filter the other day when I was installing my cell phone. It is located just above the passenger side footwell, behind the lower facia panel that contains the 12 volt accessory outlet. The facia panel is held on with four (?) spring clips. Grasp it firmly and pull straight down and it comes right off. With the facia panel removed, you will see a vertical black plastic latch. Lift the latch and the horizontal panel it secures swings down into the footwell. The pleated element filter slides straight down. You might consider putting a towel or newspaper on the floor first, when I pulled mine out I was amazed at the amount of leaves and pine needles that fell out from the dirty side of the filter.

And tips on how to clean it from Frank Kuehnl:
Tools
2 hands
flashlight (if you do not eat carrots:)
plastic or cardboard to protect floormat

Procedure
Grab onto the plastic panel just over the passenger footwell, it has the power point mounted on it. pull down, there are 4 clips to disengage. You will see a black plastic, rectangular...um...rectangle with a tab facing you. Pull the tab toward yourself and pull the bottom off the rectangle. The side with the tab goes down, and then the rest goes toward you. Inside you will see another rectangle, it is gray plastic, and has a small tab sticking out. Place you floor protection under the rectangles, grab the tab and pull down. Get out of the truck and try to get the dust out of your lungs :). Do NOT use compressed air to clean the filter! Hold the filter over a garbage can, dirty side down, and strike it against the palm of your hand.

Installation is the reverse of removal (doncha hate reading that?). When you replace the first panel you removed, try to shove your hand between the panel and the door frame to help guide the two clips into their slots (PITA).

Bosch who makes the air filter put up some instructions (though in German) on how to replace it: http://www.bosch.de/aad/de/produkte/filter/innenraum/einbau/pdf/mercedes_m.pdf

Note that the old M-Class filter is not carbon activated; it is only electrostatic. The MB part number for the better filter is "163 835 0047" but it is unknown when MB starting putting these in M-Classes.

From Gary Sellani:

I recently replaced my air filter. For MY2001, the panel location (above the feet of the passenger) is correct, but you need to remove two screws and one latch rather than 4 latches. The filter goes in vertically. Once you know this, it is pretty obvious how to replace the filter. Pay attention to which side the gasket of the old filter faced so that you can duplicate this with the new filter.

You can get it here for around $20:
