Tips on '02 install

The mud guards and bumpers are very different for the '02 facelift. Dave posted this on MBNZ:

Went to install my '02 mudflaps and learned a few things everyone might benefit from (had to abort because I need more parts from the dealer!):

Using the excellent instructions posted on this forum by SchneiderIS, Vernon, and ML430, et al.

For '02, you need 12 (not 10 as supplied by my dealer and as indicated in the instructions parts list) of the 'T' shaped rear mudflap clips 163-988-02-78. NOTE TO DREW - if your parts list for the '02 mudflap group buy only has 10 clips, you'll need to add the cost of two more -- my dealer charges $4.90US EACH! There are five along the inside of the wheel well for each flap (as shown in SchneiderIS's Pic 2-1), and one additional which is installed UNDER the mud flap a few inches BEHIND the wheel well. Naturally, additional screws are needed as well -- my dealer did not provide any, so I bought #10 x 1/2inch long stainless steel round/philips-headed sheet metal screws with stainless steel washers at the hardware store. The '02 has a new 'shelf' on the bumper onto which this 6th clip is installed (must be angled UP.) This is different than the pre-'02s which may have attached to the bottom of the wheelwell liner (as shown in SchneiderIS's Pic 6-1.) The '02's 'shelf' would be located about 2 inches down and to the left of the screwdriver tip in SchneiderIS's Pic 6-1 if that pic had been of an '02 bumper.

You will need to CUT OFF about 3/4 of an inch of the wheel well liner behind the rear wheels in order to get the mud flap on. There is actually a line scored in the liner, and the words 'MUD FLAP' crudely scribed just below it. I used tin snips to cut it off and the flap fits perfectly.

I think there is an error in SchneiderIS's front installation instructions. Pic 1-2 and the next picture of the 'sample view' of how the rivet and the bracket fit together are backwards. When you pry the old rivet head out, this will release the rivet. Pry the entire rivet (the head and the body) out of the hole and DISCARD it. Place the new rivet through the bracket (in the opposite direction of the 'sample view' photo, and into the hole left by the old rivet. You may have to force the rivet's flange into the inside of the bracket, or perhaps trim it a little since its diameter is a hair bigger than the inside of the bracket (as you can see in the 'sample view' photo.) Then press the rivet's pin in so that the body of the rivet expands inside the hole, trapping the rivet and the bracket to the underside of the car.

The nut required to hold the rear mudflap cable to the body (Pic 7-1) appears to be a 6mm.
