In a continuation of this
problem, I've isolated the
system lockup on boot to one specific Windows Update: KB908523. This
was done by installing updates one by one (all the while making system
images of the Windows partition after an update succeeded) until I found
the culprit. What's worse is this same update also exists for Windows
XP, so I can't even upgrade from Win2K to XP to fix this problem. There's
no way to report this issue to MS
