Rodney Grill's Rotex Pad Replacement

From Rodney T Grill (rgrill@csc.com):

At 24.5K miles, my ML320 needed brakes. I took the advice of several listers and bought the Rotex pads through Cox Imports ($126 delivered). Put another tally mark on the plus side for dealing with these guys. I did the job last night, which took about 1.5 hours, including removing the rotors to knock the shine off with my sander. I found that most of the pads were worn fairly even, but definitely more on the inboards. The rotors did not look to bad; I could just barely feel a bit of a grooving on the inner circumference, again mostly on the inboard side. Since the piston is also inboard, this makes sense that the inboard surface will get the most wear.

One thing I noticed was that I only have wiring for sensors on the inboard pads on left side (front and rear). The front left inboard pad was very well worn. In fact, it was worn down to the sensor, but the dash light never illuminated. I am assuming the squealing I have been hearing for the last several thousand miles was the sensor hitting the rotor. The Rotex pads came with sensors on the front, but not the rear. I did not use them, though, because the front sensors were mounted on the wrong end of the pads. I was going to reposition them, but given the fact that the original sensors did not work, I just left them off.

I only had one small problem, which was getting the front left rotor to come off the hub. It took a little persuasion with a hammer to break it loose. Otherwise, everything was very simple. So far, the Rotex pads seem decent, especially at the top of the pedal. I did have to make one hard stop this morning and they were a little mushy, but they have not had time to break-in. The Rotex pads seem to be a much harder material then the original MB pads. I guess this will be good for performance, but not so
good for the rotors, which will likely need replacement at the next brake change.
