European Options

From guy.demeestere@skynet.be:

Here in Europe, the stereo is NOT stock - so you have to order even the base radio. BOSE + CD costs $ 1650. I did not order the radio. The truck came pre-wired and with a built-in antenna.

My car-audio dealer wanted to find the right equipment for the ML (it was the 2nd one he installed - the 1st one only asked for a basic radio). I wanted a Minidisc player, a good radio and a wide-ranged, powerful, flat sound. First of all he installed a SONY Minidisc-receiver, SONY 4x 50W rms amp, Front Magnat 16cm 2-way system with tweeters in the door-triangles, rear Magnat 13 cm coaxial. Amp mounted under the rear seat (under the plastic panels), SONY 10 CD-changer under drivers seat (really cool, easy to change magazines).

The sound was very harsh, treble had to be cut to the maximum. The SONY radio was not performing well : if reception changes (which is happening all the time when driving), the tuner cuts high frequency or switches to mono, which means you feel like listening to a bad cassette tape, with the stereo image collapsing and opening randomly. I am listening 80 % radio, that was unacceptable to me.

So my dealer started all over again : the SONY unit (+ CD-player) was swapped for a brand new type KENWOOD mask-system MD-radio (+ KENWOOD 10 cd-changer).

The rear speakers were coupled to the built in amp from the Kenwood (4x22 W rms)

The front MAGNAT tweeters were changed to BOSTON ACOUSTICS tweeters. To solve the "lack of midrange" problem, the bass/mid speakers in the front doors where fed directly, without filters (only cut to the low side by the Kenwood).

The front speakers were kept hooked on to the SONY amp.

The two other channels from the amp were bridged and fed to a subwoofer, getting thus 100 W rms, placed under the rear seat, very steeply cut at 60 hz. The sub is driven by the non-fading output from the Kenwood.

Front speakers were cut under 80 hz, rear under 120 hz, also by the Kenwood.

Nothing was changed to the car, except for the built-in tweeters.

Result : delightful !

Sound is dynamic and powerful, very detailed, bass low but not "booming", voices very natural, stereo image wide, deep and stable. The sub does not bother the front or rear passengers because it is cut so low, you cannot hear where the bass is coming from. System is really suitable for all kinds of music (which I listen to) Honestly, one of the best car audio systems I ever heard.

Inconveniences :
1) sound is so clear and natural that you are unaware of pumping up the volume...
2) the sub under the back seat has to be taken out when you want to push down the seats - which is possible without any problem, it is provided with an easy connector.

Price :
Head unit + CD-changer : $ 950; Speakers front $ 300; Speakers rear $120; Amp $ 300, subwoofer $ 200. Total : $ 1870 - In the USA this should be cheaper.

So for nearly the same price as the factory stereo, I got a system that is a whole lot better, outperforming the BOSE system and even a lot more expensive systems.
