We have wanted to install a CD changer into our 99 ML320, but were reluctant to pay the dealer or even mail order price for the Mercedes changer (OEM'd Panasonic). Also the location in the rear cargo area of the vehicle did not seem very practical. So when it was announced on the M-Class digest that AUTOTOYS.COM had a 8 disc Panasonic CD changer (CX-DP801) and protocol converter (Peripheral Electronics MBZPIL) I ordered them. The 801 is a small unit and trial placement verified that it would fit nicely under the driver's seat, allowing retention of the drawer under the front passenger's seat. Rather than completely dismantle the interior to reroute the changer cable I order a new one from a Mercedes dealer (part# 163-540-31-05). The changer and cable were installed by removing the (manual, base model) driver's seat, the console (lots of wire harness plugs to keep track of), the head unit, and the small cubbie below the head unit. The brackets supplied with the Panasonic changer were modified to conform to the floor pan under the seat, attached and mounting bolts put through the carpet. The cable was routed from the head unit location down through the dash, through the console, under the carpet and back up through the carpet to the changer location. The converter and changer were mounted to the floor. The new changer cable was connected to the head unit in place of the old one, which was stuffed into the dash along with the extra length of new cable. The head unit, cubbie, console and seat were replaced. All this took me more than 4 hours, with a total cost of $327.
