Becker Mexico

From Gene:

A few days ago I upgraded my stock radio. The replacement is Becker Mexico with 6-CD changer. Few comments for those who are looking for the way to improve the sound quality and convenience.

1. Becker radio plugs right into stock harness. HOWEVER, there is a glitch. The pin 2 on the connector, marked 'not connected' in the Becker papers, IS indeed connected to cell phone mute cirquit. SO, when I pluged the radio in, it switched to PHONE mode. It is necessary to cut this particular wire. I connected the mute wire from my cell phone (Sony PCS) to this pin, and it works great.

2. I used original MB brackets for the CD changer mounting. But because the Becker changer is made by Sony, and differs from the original "Mercedes" changer (made by Panasonic, I suppose), it took me $20 worth hardware and 3 hours of my time to build additional U-shaped bracket to mount the changer.

Once I mounted it -- it works great. I could not make it skip at all (although I intentionally jumped through speed bumps at 50 MPH. It was fun! Try it with stock CD...).

3. Original MB antenna works only on FM; I can't hear anything on LW/MW/SW. I plan to install another antenna (I love shortwave) -- but for the 'casual' listener I would recomment Becker Grand Prix (it costs less and has RDS).

The higher power of the Becker pushes stock speakers (cheap and low quality) to the limits. The stock speakers should be replaced anyway, if one wants to listen to any music. There are tons of good speakers out there, from Infinity all the way to Dynaudios. I plan to have the new speakers installed in a week or two.

Overall -- I am very happy with my Becker. For the cost less than skipping OEM changer alone, I gor a great headunit/CD changer. However, I strongly recommend your local car audio shop (not Cirquit City) to install the upgraded system, and it can add to the bottom line.
